Pretty Lights Shares Secrets for His Show at Counterpoint

GRAMMY-nominated artist Derek Vincent Smith aka PrettyLights shared an up close and personal evening with various DJs, producers, media and fans tonight at the W Hotel in Midtown. Pretty Lights is set to headline CounterpointMusic and Arts Festival tomorrow night in Rome, Georgia with a full band behind him. Counterpoint will debut the artists’ festival summer production. He told us to be on the lookout for improvised core changes during his live set and it is “super likely” we will hear his famed Led Zeppelin mash up.

Day 1 Photos of Counter Point Are Up!

Friday at Counter Point came to a close and Saturday is another beautiful day in Georgia! Check out these awesome shots we caught yesterday, and look out tonight and Sunday, as well for even more shots! Find out where we plan on shooting this Saturday and come find us!

Big Gigantic Dishes Their Love for “The A”

Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken, both members of Big Gigantic, made time to hang out with us before their set last Friday night at Counterpoint Music Festival. Counterpoint is among many of the festivals Big Gigantic has made appearances at, including Coachella,  Bonnaroo and lollapalooza. The sun was beginning to set over Kingston Downs when Dominic and Jeremy walked into the media tent and promptly greeted us with hugs. We talked about Atlanta, but referred to it as “the A” while they reminisced about previous tours and having played at the Buckhead Theatre (previously known as the Roxy), all three of the venues in The Masquerade, Variety ...continue reading

Party In The Park Returns to Centennial Saturday

Five bands for $40! Seems too good to be true, right? It doesn’t have to be this weekend at Centennial Olympic Park for Rival Entertainment’s Annual “Party in the Park.” Local act Stokeswood gets the party started at 3:15.  Stokeswood’s last show was at Counterpoint where they rocked the festival grounds. Don’t miss their set full of “Low-Endie” rock, a term coined by the band to describe their style which you’ll have to see to understand. We asked Courtney Okst, a student at Kennesaw State, who attended Party in the Park last year what she thought of the previous year’s event, “I remember sitting on my friend’s shoulders during Ellie ...continue reading

Through My Eyes: A view of day 1 at Hangout Fest

Great music, great people, the sun and the beach?! Hell yeah!  Hangout Fest is like a magical music land and I love that it's on the beach.  Everyone is so chill and relaxed, even the guy I saw pinned  to the ground by security (still not sure what he did) seemed pretty easy going though.  After my noninvasive pat down at the entrance, I was finally inside this magical land where faces were lit, and so was half the crowd, as Wiz Khalifa took the stage.   Black & Yellow, Black & Yellow... I missed out on that one, ...continue reading

Through My Eyes: A view of day 2 at Hangout Fest

Sorry for party rocking... So this is a little late but that's only because Saturday was so much freaking fun! Running late again,  we got there just as Modest Mouse was finishing up their set. I was able to hear the last of 'Float On' as I had my "concealed" sandwiches and organic cheesy puffs confiscated at the security line. After a regretted trip to the porter potty, we headed over to see Flaming lips put on an awesome show. Their stage presence was quite creative to say the least.  The entire band was dressed in metallic streamers, including most of the ...continue reading

Through My Eyes: A view of day 3 at Hangout Fest

Sunday was the last day of the festival so you know they had to go out with a bang. Capital Cities was the first show we caught for the day. They put on a pretty great performance and had some huge ass beach balls for the crowd to toss around. Now let me just say, the person that pops the beachball at a concert is like the person that told you the Easter bunny didn't exist. Party pooper. We hung around at the main stage after the performance to wait on The Avett Brothers. I'd been wanting to see them for ...continue reading

Amaluna Backstage

So you want to attend a Cirque show, but don't see a trip to Vegas in your near future? No problem. With the traveling Cirque du Soleil shows, the newest to visit Atlanta being Amaluna, there's no need to book a flight or pack any bags. I had the pleasure of catching last night's show and was even able to attend a backstage Q and A session. The show itself, Amaluna, showcases some really great talents pushing the human body to its limits, though the cast seem limitless. Amaluna, meaning "mother moon" is the first Cirque show to have a predominantly female cast (yay for girls), including an all female ...continue reading

Ryan Cabrera interview

Sexy, fun, party- the three words Ryan Cabrera used to describe the sound of his new EP, "Wake Up Beautiful", featuring the single "House on Fire" which was released this month. Ryan's last full album "The Moon Under Water" was released seven years ago so of course his fans are excited to hear the new material. Atlanta is one of the many stops along his "Radio Revival Tour" and I got a chance to catch up with Ryan before his performance at the Masquerade on Saturday night. The 32 years old singer was hanging out in his tour bus, soothing ...continue reading

4 Reasons to Hit Up Fool’s Gold Day Off

Fool’s Gold Records started “Day Off” in a parking lot five years ago and it has grown tremendously since. This party was a dream of artists and fans coming together the record label made come true. Here are four reasons you don’t want to miss out this year! 1) A-Trak When A-Trak plays the room listens. He is the perfect combination of hip hop and electronic music. It doesn’t matter if he is at a festival, concert venue or underground club because the party is bumping and asses are shaking. Did we mention he’s the founder of Fool’s Gold Records ...continue reading

NFL Week 1-2015

Week 1 Fly high, fly low. Monday night had an interesting matchup between Atlanta and Philadelphia. Odd calls, poor QB play and offensive lines that had no push in the running games left me not knowing exactly how to feel about either team. Philadelphia isn’t overrated. I know all of the Atlanta fans are alternating that and “Rise Up” as their Tuesday motto, but it has to be taken with a grain of salt. A Chip Kelly offense is predicated on first down. With that in mind, they averaged -1.18 yards per rush on first down… That’s not good. Being ...continue reading

Top Tips For Getting the Most Out of TomorrowWorld 2015

When you live in a thriving metropolitan city that serves as the capital of the southeast, there is never a shortage of exciting events on a fall weekend. This weekend, Atlanta is no exception to that rule. Tomorrowworld is explosive even for one day, so if you're without a Full Madness Pass and just planning one day, fear not. Make it a more diverse weekend with some other events around town. The PGA Tour Championship begins today and lasts all weekend at East Lake, the Annual Taste of Atlanta takes over Tech Square and Midtown all weekend, Turner Field plays host ...continue reading

Music Midtown 2015 Recap!

Day 1 285 East was shut down due to a shooting and ten crashes occurred that evening. I patted myself on the back for deciding to take MARTA from my Midtown office to Piedmont Park Friday afternoon. As I walked from the train, I saw a man selling bubble guns. Should I buy one? Ultimately the decision was no but it did remind me to head to the dollar store before my next camping adventure. The first sounds I heard upon reaching Piedmont Park were Tove Lo’s “Stay High” and the eager crowd singing along. I grabbed a beer and ...continue reading

Top 5 Underground DJs at TomorrowWorld

At TomorrowWord you create your own destiny. There are three forces at work to generate an unimaginable festival experience. 1) The vibes of your crew, 2) energy of the crowd, and 3) uncommonly skilled artists.  If you're not looking to spend your weekend at main stage these are the underground shows you don't want to miss.     jackLNDN When you follow jackLNDN on Instagram it's obvious he is one of the most humble dudes in the scene. Although, he has a lot to brag about considering he warmed up Red Rocks for Bassnectar back in May. If you think disco is dead jackLNDN is here to revive your doubts. What Really Happened in Dreamville and TomorrowWorld Superlatives

Monday morning we returned to our vehicle where it had remained all weekend. Under a thick layer of mud following the four previous days of continuous rain and after the rural Georgia elements took their toll. After little sleep, and lots of dancing, our group took a deep breath and then smacked hands for one last 'high five' of the weekend. We had endured the weekend's worrisome weather and still left with a smile on our faces. We had endured the weekend's worrisome weather and still left with smiles on our faces. There is no denying the added difficulty everyone ...continue reading

How to Oktoberfest like a pro

There are a lot of amazing things about Atlanta & they have been getting attention from event producers big & small.  For instance, Trigger Agency of Baltimore.  Trigger, has put on Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Fest in Atlanta for the last 4 years & brought the Das Best Oktoberfest to Atlanta for the first time last weekend.  A unique aspect of Trigger agency events is in that they tour these events through various cities during the year.  Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Fest and Das Best Oktoberfest are just two events in a stable of roughly 11 toured by Trigger. Hashtag DadBod

Now I do realize dadbod is not being hashtagged like it was quite recently but the physical dad bod still exists everywhere. Before long, Leo's midlife crisis will be included in the new healthcare coding. This trend came out like a working yo-yo that should've rolled its little chubby self right back in. The dad bod, like a Mr. Potato Head doll is fun for sure, maybe entertaining to photograph, but will eventually fall apart. I'm simply providing some pro's and con's and hope you all make wise informed decisions going forward with your weekends surrounded by leagues of frat ...continue reading

Nashville, known as the Music City, hosted Pretty Lights at its new premier riverfront outdoor venue, Ascend Amphitheater for Halloween 2015. Pretty Lights fans from all over traveled to see his performance. A cold rain was in the forecast, but that did not stop the fans from attending a sold out show. Pretty Lights fans gathered together in an assortment of costumes to celebrate Hallow’s Eve and support the popular American electronic artist. Myself, a native from Birmingham, AL made the short drive to Nashville to catch the phenomenal show. Once you entered into the Music City you knew you ...continue reading

Zeds Dead at Terminal West Recap!

One of Atlanta’s most anticipated artist appearances, Zeds Dead, made for one of the most memorable weekends, for those who had the pleasure of watching them perform. Zeds Dead held a packed house at Terminal West, as their shows sold out both nights, and was followed by an after party at Opera Night Club, which exceeded the highest expectations. Interview with Pyramid Scheme

Over the weekend I spent some time in "The Zone” with Pyramid Scheme and discussed their upcoming album. They shattered my vision of what a trap artist’s life is like, explained their long journey to “Thundercat” and beyond.

Brillz brings the Twonk DiNation tour to Opera

Liquified and Opera have been having nationally touring EDM artists on Friday since as long as I can remember. This Friday was special though because of Atlanta's trap music roots. No one personifies the modern trap music genre better that Brillz. This year's visit included Aryay, Dotcom and Party Favor as openers. Aryay is up and coming but Dotcom and Party Favor could host their own tour given their recent success. Enhancing the experience was the new sound system from Pure Groove Sound Systems. Opera has the first permanent club system in the US although Pure Groove has international respect ...continue reading

Alison Wonderland Recap – 2.19.16 @ Opera

I first heard of Alison Wonderland about a year ago when her debut album, "Run" made quite a splash in the US. This was not only for her album debut tour around strip clubs instead of more typical venues but also for her VEVO music video for "U Don't Know." I first saw this video on social media that portrayed a her being kidnapped by McLovin.  This is hilariously fitting for an album called "Run." Even though she describes the meaning behind "Run" as always moving forward, she showed she doesn't take life too seriously by featuring McLovin in a more ...continue reading

Are you Kurios?

Are you Kurios? I love a good show just as much the next person, but Cirque shows are my favorite which is why I get school girl giddy the moment I know they're coming into town. That big blue and yellow tent has been going up for weeks now and I can see it each day from my office in Atlantic Station (19th Street Dental. Ask for Jillian. I'll clean yo' teeth!) This year's show, Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities had my interest since the moment I first heard about it. Though it first premiered in Canada in 2014 and has ...continue reading

Atlanta Brunch Fest Recap

Brunch, the love child of the two best meals of the day. Itself, not just a meal, but a time of day in which calorie counting doesn't exist and drinking before noon is completely acceptable. Chicken and waffles, breakfast potatoes and perfectly cooked brisket, bloody marys and mimosas. Atlanta Brunch Festival brought us all of this and more. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. With well over 20 restaurants, there were plenty of food options to please even the pickiest of palates. The chicken chilaquiles  from Guaco Joe’s and the peanut butter French toast from Einstein's were my top ...continue reading

Baauer Visits Variety Playhouse on 3/31/16

Baauer stopped in Atlanta last Thursday on his 'Aa' Tour. This is surprisingly Baauer's first album and has garnered some critical acclaim from the likes of Major Lazer and others. I've gotta think he is ready to stop being "the guy known for the Harlem Shake." This is the album that just may accomplish that mission although that's quite a feat. 'Aa' reached the top of the iTunes charts and Baauer recently got to play a mix on BBC Radio 1 so the past month has been huge for him. The set itself exposed Baauer's NYC roots with Missy Elliot being ...continue reading

Getting the most out of this weekend’s Sweetwater 420Fest

It's April in Atlanta and we've already moistened our palletes with the spring festivals around town, but none quite kicks off the season like the Sweetwater 420 Fest taking place this weekend at Centennial Olympic Park! Below are our top tips for making the most of the festival in downtown whether you're going for one day or all three!   What's on your feet?     Take a gander at the weather forecast before heading down to the Park. Last year's rain debacle made all three days a mudfest. Flip flops were left scattered, people were going barefoot - ...continue reading

Steve Aoki & Friends Block Party Preview

Steve Aoki and his label Dim Mak are basically household names now (although far from basic), and you can find a lot of the Dim Mak crew’s music in just about every ipod, cell phone, and music library owned by a modern human. With a record label that is older than many of its fans, Dim Mak artists have been topping charts for at least 20 years. To celebrate that milestone, Steve Aoki & Friends will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary tour and stopping by in Atlanta to throw the most insane block party the city has seen. With previous ...continue reading

5 Reasons to Make The Trip To Tampa for Sunset Music Festival

Here are 5 reasons you should join me for Sunset Music Festival in Tampa this year: A lineup with great artists that won't be in Atlanta this year. Since there is no TomorrowWorld this year Atlanta just won't pull as many artists as they did in years past. So if you want to see the likes of Claude Vonstroke and  Jack U this year you better come to Tampa. The weather in Tampa in May. The average high is 85°F during May and the average low is 70°F. It doesn't get much better than that for an outdoor festival. The average ...continue reading

The Moon Ride From An Owls Eye View

I was asked to write about the Moon Ride the night of the event. However, being an owl sometimes my flight schedule gets in the way of the simple enjoyments of life. So while I'm perched at cruising altitude on the wing of a steel bird heading to another exciting event let me reminisce about the best event that occurs in Atlanta each year. If you're sitting there thinking what the hell is the moon ride, you're not alone. I was wearing my annual shirt at the airport and answering intrigued questions for a few hours before i boarded the ...continue reading

Imagine Music Festival 2016 Recap

Imagine is one of the nation's last independent music festivals and is in its 3rd year. This year was significantly different due to its need to expand due to the growth in popularity of the festival .This required a venue change to Atlanta Motor Speedway from the Old Fourth Ward Park. This venue change paid off mainly because of the amenities offered by a facility ready to host a crowd of up to 100,000 people. The lineup had also grown from filling 3 to 5 stages. The 887 acre footprint and infrastructure of the site allowed for the expanded vision of the ...continue reading

Above and Beyond At The Atlanta Coliseum

Above and Beyond is one of the largest names in electronic dance music. They graced Atlanta with a rare visit. They have been around for over a decade. Their well-known radio podcast, “Group Therapy,” has over 200 episodes. If you need more reason to see them live then you should check out the review. Music- Otto Yliperttula aka Yotto opened the show starting around 10pm.  Yotto is gaining traction on the Ajuanadeep label. I did recognize his “Personal Space” track from Pete Tong and his music blends perfectly as an opener for Above and Beyond. Above and Beyond started with ...continue reading

Buckhead Theater hosts The Kooks tour

The halls of Buckhead Theater quickly filled with fans escaping the harsh winter rain that Atlanta has come to know too well. Teens accompanied by their parents, leather jacket-clad twenty-somethings, popped collar polo boys and middle-aged couples, a diverse crowd you'd expect to see at an outdoor music festival, filled the small music venue, eager to see Tuesday night's headliner, The Kooks. I got in shortly after the second opener, Barns Courtney, the English singer touring with The Kooks, took the stage. From his fringe lined leather jacket to his headband held shag hair, everything about Courtney screamed rock-and-roll, including ...continue reading
