Pretty Lights Shares Secrets for His Show at Counterpoint

Pretty Lights Shares Secrets for His Show at Counterpoint

Published by liz

prettyGRAMMY-nominated artist Derek Vincent Smith aka PrettyLights shared an up close and personal evening with various DJs, producers, media and fans tonight at the W Hotel in Midtown. Pretty Lights is set to headline CounterpointMusic and Arts Festival tomorrow night in Rome, Georgia with a full band behind him. Counterpoint will debut the artists’ festival summer production. He told us to be on the lookout for improvised core changes during his live set and it is “super likely” we will hear his famed Led Zeppelin mash up.

Carmen Rizzo, two-time GRAMMY Nominee producer-remixer and our the moderator for the evening, first commented on Derek’s height when he walked on stage and asked if he ever played basketball. “Still do,” was his shy reply.

Anyone who was in the room could feel the humbleness coming from the stage and it made us all feel right at home. In fact, he was probably the most nervous person there.

When Derek was asked about his roots in Atlanta he laughed and said coyly, “I spent a lot of summers in Smyrna and Peachtree City, a lot of firsts happened there.”

RSVPAtl asked what is your favorite music venue in Atlanta? After a few shouts from the crowd of anticipated replies Derek confirmed The Tabernacle is indeed his number one choice. To keep it lighthearted our next question was simple, paper or plastic? He did a double take and repeated the question back to us; you could see he was a little thrown. He chuckled and said, “It depends on what city I’m in. In New Orleans they stress not to bring paper bags into your house because the cockroaches will come in and eat them.”

According to Derek, he loves Stella and dabs and still frequents record shops in every town. His favorite genre of music to sample is exotica, a 60s Brazilian psychedelic bossa nova style.

Pretty Lights will headline Counterpoint Music and Arts Festival Friday, April 25 at 10 p.m. on the Blu Freedom Stage.
